I'm mixed on this book. I love the idea of turning the princess/prince-charming theme on its head. Goodness knows our girls get inundated with it. But like others who read it, I actually didn't find this that amusing, partly because the 'tests' that Princess Smartypants subjects the prospective princes too are a little mean. In fact, the whole book has a little bit of 'mean girls' undertone that bugged me (and that's another theme our girls get plenty of.) That being said, I'm still reading it to my daughters if they ask, and I try and have a sense of humor about it when we read it, which takes the edge off. But I wish someone would do this theme in a way that focused more on empowerment and less on gender-divisiveness...

Great book for young girls AND boys! Funny, smart and empowering. I was given this as an adult. I am still wondering WHY my friend's mother gave it to me, but I don't care. It is a wonderful book for any age. I love Princess Smartypants!
A must-have for budding feminists and empowered youth
Darling book, great message
Arrived Quickly, just as described.
This is one of my favorite books to give to friends with young daughters (this and the Paper Bag Princess). Princess Smarty-pants is having none of this being married off to a prince idea, and goes through a string of would-be suitors, terrifying, outwitting, and out-smarting them until she's able to live happily ever after without any prince at all.
The book is fabulous! I remember reading it as a little girl and I just had to get it for my girl. Princess Smarty pants loves her "animals" and is not so interested in the princes' that are courting her. It's a fun play on being independent and smart. I have to say, reading it as an adult was a totally different experience then as a little girl Babette Cole is full of enjoyable satire!
I hated this book. I hated it so much I paid good money to return it. I couldn’t even bring myself to regift it. Spoilers below.
People often confuse sassy and smart. This book is really about the former. A princess is uninterested in her parents’ desire to marry her off. She puts each suitor through tasks. Some are shallow and some are cruel. The final suiter sails through all her tasks so she turns him into an ugly toad. That’s not being smart. That’s called being a jerk.
