This is one of those Rubber Necking Train Wrecks books. Revel is never really nice to her. He appears to look at her w/ hate in his eyes, there aren't any loving gestures. It was his way or the highway. Carla acts like a beaten puppy that just can't get enough of him.
Revel never believes a word out of Carla's mouth and EVERYTHING is someone else's fault from the difficulty in Vivienne and Bernard's marriage, to the discovery of her hymen, to the ultimate "murder" later on. Nothing is ever this guy's fault! Even his cruelty to Carla isn't his fault.

He makes Carla beg for him and acts as though he won't do it again...he does! He has an ex GF decorate their home and hang around w/ Carla to do so. He could have still been messing w/ the ex and he might have even been doing Vivienne as well. The ex makes it sound like there may have been something going on there. We never really know what he was getting up to when he left the house for several hours and coming home so late. I guess we are supposed to trust him - well I didn't and I am notorious for those rose colored glasses. Revel's POV isn't there, but even he stated men and women can't be friends - as though they have to be lovers or nothing at all. I guess that means Vivienne can't be a childhood friend, huh?
This back and forth that they do continues on until she finally decides to make a permanent out of his life action. Explanations commence. He always sensed a sensitivity in her - really that's why he treated her so appallingly? Got the truth from Bernard - of course believes him not the woman he will profess to love. He apologizes several times - sometimes it works and sometimes it's not enough. He loves her and he has broken her - think he threatened to do that to begin w/ so he did get what he wanted, right?
