Adrenaline is a pretty good medical thriller. Well written, good action, straightforward story line but pretty darned predictable. Not difficult to pick out the bad guys and when you find out who is doing what to whom, it's not a huge surprise. Characters are good and we build empathy for the good guys, and the action takes twists and turns.Feels very authentic. Just a few pages in, I thought, "the author is an anesthesiologist." The jargon, the ins and outs of hospital operations (albeit a poorly run hospital with murders) seems authentic (except for the murderers). Mr. Benedict goes overboard on the technology (showing off, it seems) but that's an engaging sidebar to anyone who is fascinated by medicine.
When you read it, think of it as more of a thriller than a whodunit and it's an enjoyable, if not shocking, read.

ADRENALINE edition by John Benedict Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
There were plenty of plot twists and turns and quite a few unexpected events. This book started off a bit slow compared to many other medical thrillers I have chosen to read in the past. Then it would pick up the pace and accelerate to more than one surprising event and then decline to the point I couldn't wait for some action. There were more villains than the norm in one context and they were really nasty!! I wasn't at all surprised to read the author's autobiography and how cool is it that he does EXACTLY in real life what he writes about? It's like he didn't have to do his homework, just go to work!!! I will read more from this author and this is one of my favorite genres any way. I would definitely recommend reads by Mr. Benedict. Even the conclusion was like the story just went away; interesting to say the least.
This is a medical thriller, about patients dying while in the OR (operating room) of Mercy Hospital. The rate of death is very high. This has Doug Landry an anesthesiologist in the crosshairs as who is to blame. This book covers almost every aspect of a hospital, from the board room, operating room and recovery room, it is all there. Can Landry prove that he is not to blame, and in clearing his name does he find the person who is responsible?
My 3 star rating is actually a 3 and 1/2. I've enjoyed many medical thrillers and Adrenaline definitely fit the bill as one of them. Good story line, but a bit too many subplots that I had a bit of difficulty in the beginning keeping them straight. Many people have complained about the significant amount of cursing and normally I do not enjoy it myself; however, in this case I feel it did lend itself well to the actually characters and made them more believable. I definitely enjoyed the doctors being anesthesiologists, a viewpoint you don't read a lot about. The book did meander a bit off and on, then almost seems to leaps into triple time at the end.
This was an OK read...unless you’re a medical professional it was a little too technical which distracted from the story & made it boring. It took me over a week to read simply because I didn’t mind putting it down for a while & then returning...not a thriller you can’t put down...and suddenly everything happens in the last few chapters, even if it is a bit unrealistic. Gunshots are flying in a hospital, yet no one comes to see what’s happening or calls the police....yeah, right. Not too believable. Three stars for the effort.
I have read all four of John Benedict's books, all related to anesthesiology in one way or another. He is a fantastic author and his books are so thorough and have such unexpected plots that I could not put them down. I dreamed about the scenarios after reading the books. I have worked in the medical field as a transcriptionist for 30+ years and from what I know, he did not miss a thing in his description of events. Such an exciting author and it helps that he is also an anesthesiologist. Don't miss any of his books. He is currently working on another one and I can hardly wait.
Ok, so they're doctors, but they appear a little stupid and cowardly. It amazed me that it took so long for them to figure out what was going on. Then at the end for one of them to not jump in at the beginning to help (trying to not give away any spoilers here) subdue the bad guy, was just plain stupid and cowardly to me. Except for a few grammatical errors the writing was ok. I enjoyed the different points of view giving an insight to the various characters. I would have given it a 4or maybe even a 5 star rating if the ending fight scene had been different rather than trying to draw out the drama for a few additional pages, should have invested those pages into explaining what happened as a result of everything, i.e., what happened with the merger, what was the effect on the families - the hospital. I need closure!
Real intense book start to finish given passages like this "One minute you're having a casual conversation with a living, breathing, laughing, for God's sakes, human being and the next you're pumping on his chest. He becomes subhuman before your eyes as his face turns all purple and mottled." Gave me the chills thinking someone could go around a hospital sabotaging the machinery (which might not be too far-fetched). While the first half of the book reads like a medical thriller that someone of Robin Cook's stature might have written, book slips some in the back half given some incredulous moments (hence the 4-star rating) but still PLENTY of action to carry it forward to it's climatic conclusion. Some language noted for those that do not enjoy cursing, but still a very good book such that I wouldn't mind grabbing the sequel sometime down the road.
